Are we, as a nation, over-indulged?

For a couple of years I have pondered about any potential GOOD that could come from a deep recession in the United States. Well, we’re in some terribly tough times right now. Although it is just awful for so many people, I keep hoping that some valuable lessons will be learned while we all await a recovery.

First, I’m hoping these economic struggles may lead more people to reach out to God for help and guidance. Second, perhaps there’ll be a resurgence of families and neighbors reaching out more to each other. I wasn’t around during the Great Depression; but, I remember reading that people were more inclined to help one another then. After decades of selfishness and disconnect we seem to have lost the desire to be good neighbors and assist our families when necessary.

Personally, I never thought I couldn’t turn to family or friends if I needed help. But, I fear there are many who don’t have that comfort. Am I wrong? Do you know anyone who is so totally alone they just don’t have anyone to whom they can turn? (more…)
